Laurent's parents thought that his grandparents were exaggerating when they noticed something very special in him. However, his teachers recognised that the boy was gifted. He started school at the age of four and completed five years of study in just 12 months.
Teachers gave Laurent tests after tests to determine the extent of his skills and talents. "They told us he is like a sponge," Laurent's father Alexander said.
Lydia, the boy's mother, jokes that she "ate a lot of fish during the pregnancy."
Sjoerd Hulshof, education director of the TUE bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, in a statement, said, "That is not unusual. Special students that have good reasons for doing so can arrange an adjusted schedule. In much the same way we help students who participate in top sport."
While praising Laurent, Hulshof said that he is "simply extraordinary".
"Laurent is the fastest student we have ever had here. Not only is he hyper-intelligent but also a very sympathetic boy," he added.
Laurent, who has an IQ of at least 145 will take the world record of becoming the youngest graduate from Michael Kearney, who graduated from the University of Alabama at the age of ten. Kearney has held the title since 1994.
Prestigious universities around the world have approached the family for Laurent's higher education.
He has already decided what he wants to do in life - develop artificial organs.
The boy's parents said that they don't want him to get too serious. Like other children of his age, he loves to play with his dog and use his phone. "We need to find a balance between being a child and his talents," his father said.
Laurent Simons has an IQ of at least 145. His parents, Lydia and Alexander Simons, say that his grandparents and teachers noticed there was something special about him at a young age.
"They noticed something very special about Laurent," said Lydia. "The absorption of information is no problem for Laurent," said his father.
Laurent told The Telegraph that he wants to travel to California to continue his studies. His father, however, is also keen on the UK. "Oxford and Cambridge are also in the major league and it would be very much more convenient for us," the 37-year-old dentist said.
Nine-year-old Laurent Simons also said that his favourite subject is electrical engineering and he's also "going to study a bit of medicine."
His parents want him to find a balance between "being a child and his talents." Outside of studies, Laurent likes to play games like Fortnite, hang out with his friends and watch Netflix. His Instagram account, where he has more than 11,000 followers, gives a glimpse into his life.
Laurent Simons will complete his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) in December. He is set to become the world's youngest graduate at just a very young age of nine (9).
